Why We're Choosing to Create More Self-Build Opportunities

For many people, building their own home feels like an impossible dream. It conjures up images of television programmes filled with spiralling budgets, planning battles, unreliable contractors and years of stress, something reserved for architects, developers or those with years of experience.

We don't believe it should be that way.

One of the questions we're increasingly asked is why we're choosing to bring more self-build plots to the market, when many developers would simply build the homes themselves. The answer is surprisingly simple: over the years, we've come to realise that the happiest homes are rarely the ones designed around what sells quickest. They're the ones designed around the people who will actually live in them; the way they cook, the way they gather around the kitchen island after school, the way they work from home, entertain friends, or seek calm at the end of a busy day. These are the details that truly shape a home.

That's why we've become passionate about creating opportunities for more families to build homes that genuinely reflect their lives. Self-build isn't easy, but with the right foundations and the right support, we believe it's far more achievable than many people imagine.

A Home Designed Around Your Life

Most new homes ask you to adapt your lifestyle to the house. A self-build allows the opposite.

Perhaps you've always imagined a kitchen that naturally becomes the heart of family life, a boot room that makes muddy walks and wet dogs less stressful, or a peaceful home office overlooking the garden. Maybe it's an accessible layout that allows you to stay in your home for years to come, a bedroom designed to encourage restful sleep, or a garden that gently invites children outdoors.

These aren't extravagant luxuries. They're thoughtful decisions that influence how your family experiences everyday life, often for decades. Rather than choosing from a handful of standard layouts, self-build allows your home to be shaped around your routines, your priorities and your future, because no two families live in exactly the same way, so why should every home be the same?

We've Already Solved Many of the Difficult Parts

For most people, the biggest obstacle isn't building the house. It's knowing where to begin; finding suitable land, understanding planning policy, assessing technical constraints, commissioning surveys, weighing environmental considerations, managing risk. Before you've even started thinking about floor plans, the process can feel overwhelming.

This is where our experience becomes valuable. Every self-build plot we release has already been carefully assessed through the planning process. We've considered planning policy, access, ecology, drainage, services, environmental constraints and many of the hidden complexities that often catch first-time self-builders by surprise, so you don't have to begin your journey with uncertainty. Instead, you begin with confidence.

You're Never Left to Figure It Out Alone

Some people already have an architect, builder and project manager lined up. Others don't know where to start. We're comfortable with both.

If you're simply looking for a planning-ready plot, we'll happily step back and let you build your own team. If you'd value guidance throughout your journey, we're equally happy to stay alongside you. Our role isn't to take over your project, it's to help you make informed decisions. Depending on your needs, we can support you with:

  • Bespoke architectural design

  • Planning advice

  • Interior design

  • Lifestyle-led space planning

  • Sustainable and environmental design

  • Material selection

  • Renewable technologies

  • Build coordination

  • Landscaping and biodiversity

Every self-build journey is different, and the level of support should be too.

Designing Homes That Feel Better to Live In

One of the things we think about most isn't simply how a home looks. It's how it feels: how morning light fills the kitchen, whether you can see the garden while making a cup of tea, whether storage quietly reduces everyday stress, how natural ventilation improves comfort, how carefully chosen materials age gracefully over time, how a bedroom encourages deep rest. Views, planting and natural textures influence our wellbeing more than we often realise.

These aren't decorative extras, they're part of creating homes that genuinely support the people living inside them. It's why biophilic design, sustainability and wellbeing aren't separate ideas within our business. They're deeply connected, and when a home works with nature, it almost always works better for the people who call it home.

Building Responsibly

We also believe building a home comes with responsibility. Every decision we make has an impact beyond the front door, which is why we consider biodiversity, energy efficiency, sustainable materials and long-term performance from the very beginning.

Our aim isn't simply to build beautiful homes. It's to create places that sit comfortably within their landscape and continue performing well for generations. To us, sustainability isn't about adding technology at the end of a project, it's about making thoughtful decisions from the very first sketch.

More Than Selling Land

At We Are Millen, we don't see ourselves as plot sellers. We see ourselves as helping families create homes that couldn't exist any other way, homes designed around their routines, their children, their future, their wellbeing, their values.

We've spent years learning what makes people truly love where they live, and self-build gives families the opportunity to create exactly that. Our role is simply to remove as many of the barriers as possible, because we believe the best homes aren't simply bought. They're thoughtfully created. And if we can help make that journey feel less intimidating, more enjoyable and ultimately more rewarding, then that's exactly what we want to do.

Perhaps Self-Build Is Closer Than You Think

If you've ever driven past a beautiful home and wondered what it would be like to create something that's entirely your own, perhaps that dream isn't as far away as it seems.

Whether you're ready to start searching for a plot, curious about the self-build process, or simply looking for honest advice before taking the first step, we'd love to have a conversation, just drop us an email or give us a call we are a friendly team always happy to help.

Great homes begin long before construction starts, with thoughtful planning, careful design, and people who genuinely care about the outcome. That's exactly where we believe every self-build journey should start.
